Don’t miss this exclusive, in-depth conversation with Jazz Legend, Louise Tobin. She will share her experiences and stories from her outstanding career.

Native-Texan jazz singer, Louise Tobin (b. 1918) is one of the last important survivors of the swing era. With a professional career spanning much of the 20th century, she can recount personal stories about her associations with such history-makers of jazz as Harry James (her first husband), Ben Pollack, John Hammond, George Simon, Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, Fletcher Henderson, Peanuts Hucko (her second husband), Louis Armstrong, and so many others. Hers is a unique story of the various challenges women musicians faced during the big band era and beyond.

Participants Needed for TWU Dissertatioin

This is a request from our long-time patient, Mary Bittle, who is a doctoral candidate at TWU:

My name is Mary Bittle, and I am a doctoral candidate majoring in Family Therapy conducting a research study for my dissertation. The purpose of the study is to discover lived experiences and their meanings for couples when one of them has had a first-time heart event from six weeks to one year ago. It is my plan that what I learn from couples can help family therapists and other health care workers understand and help couples who have had a cardiac event in their lives. This study proposal has been approved by the Texas Woman’s University Institutional Review Board for protection of participants’ rights.

You are invited to participate if you are adults (age 21 or older) living together in a committed relationship for at least a year prior to the heart event and residing in Collin, Dallas, Denton, or Tarrant County, Texas. A first-time heart event can be any of the following:

  • heart attack/myocardial infarction (MI),
  • percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)/percutaneous coronary

intervention (PCI)/angioplasty,

  • coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, or
  • heart valve surgery.

You must be physiologically stable, mentally competent, free of terminal illness, be able to speak and read English, and be unknown to me prior to the study.

Confidentiality will be protected to the extent that is allowed by law. I will conduct one interview with you as a couple together at a private location of your choosing. The interview will last one to two hours and will be audio-taped. The interview will be transcribed verbatim with omission of any identifying data used in the interview. Transcripts and annotations from field notes will be coded for protection of your confidentiality. Participation in this study is completely voluntary for both partners. Any participant may choose to withdraw from the study at any time. Identifiable contact information and informed consents will be maintained in a locked file safe to which only I have access, in my personal office during the study. Identifiable contact information will be destroyed two years after completion of the study. Informed consents will become a part of the final report submitted to the TWU IRB.
